Women continue to face oppression with no protection measures in place

The world sees only what is reflected but the oppressed see it all

For decades, calling for gender equality has been at the forefront. However, it seems these efforts have been in vain, as women continue to face various forms of oppression in our societies, from domestic violence and discrimination to limited access to justice. Despite all this, there are still no clear and effective measures in place to protect them.

Kadzo Farida, a 17- year-old girl from Kilifi County, sadly passed away last week under unclear circumstances. According to her aunt, Rose Wambua, Farida sustained fatal injuries after being stabbed in the neck. Reports also indicate that in 2021, she was a survivor of sexual violence and the suspect in that case is currently serving a 2 year prison sentence. We've also had a similar case where a mid age woman, fellister, from Uhuru market along jogoo road in Nairobi was stabbed by her ex boyfriend under unclear circumstances.

As gender based violence continues to rise, the government must take immediate and deliberate action. We cannot sit back and watch as the younger generation is destroyed without reason. We need future generations and girls like Kadzo, who was still so young and held untold potential. We'll never know who she could have become.

The government, in collaboration with investigative bodies, should work closely to provide a clear and honest statement, one that addresses the root causes of why men continue to harm and kill women. What is driving this violence? Are these actions done in full consciousness? Could there be a deeper, hidden motives behind them? These are some of the questions that deserve answers.

Women are an essential part of our society. Their significant contributions to the economy, social progress and overall well being. Their economic empowerment leads to increased productivity, income equality and better spending habits that benefit families and communities. This means women's lives matter deeply. When we harm or kill them, we are not only destroying individuals, but weakening the very foundation of our communities. It must stop.
